No surface faulting occurred, though many other ground failures and landslides were present, especially in the Summit area of the Santa Cruz Mountains. The Loma Prieta segment of the San Andreas Fault System had been relatively inactive since the 1906 San Francisco earthquake (to the degree that it was designated a seismic gap) until two moderate foreshocks occurred in June 1988 and again in August 1989.ĭamage was heavy in Santa Cruz County and less so to the south in Monterey County, but effects extended well to the north into the San Francisco Bay Area, both on the San Francisco Peninsula and across the bay in Oakland. With an M w magnitude of 6.9 and a maximum Modified Mercalli intensity of IX ( Violent), the shock was responsible for 63 deaths and 3,757 injuries. The shock was centered in The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park in Santa Cruz County, approximately 10 mi (16 km) northeast of Santa Cruz on a section of the San Andreas Fault System and was named for the nearby Loma Prieta Peak in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake occurred on California's Central Coast on October 17 at 5:04 p.m. 2 weeks later Manhattan and Brooklyn suffered major damage to several moderate to major earthquakes, the largest of them being magnitude 7.4. and San Francisco was going to get hit due to a not so obvious connection between an unknown fault, connecting with the San Andreas Fault as a 7.1 hit Nevada centered just 5 miles north of the Hoover Dam, causing it to collapse. Later 4 aftershocks of the 9.6 earthquake hit in magnitudes: 6.7 7.1 8.4 8.9. The resulting tsunamis destroyed the ruins of the following cities and counties: Marin, Napa, San Francisco, and Monterey as well as coastal areas of central California. Just 2 hours after the first earthquake, another major earthquake occurred on the 236 miles of the northern San Andreas Fault at magnitude 9.6, this one was felt as far, as Miami Florida. There were 7 aftershocks ranging in magnitudes from 6.7 to 7.8. The initial earthquake was felt as far north as San Francisco and the Bay Area. The damage in Southern California is expected to be massive in fact the entire state took a hit from the first quake.

The first one struck at 12:20pm just 20 miles east of Downtown Los Angeles, Cell towers were down, most of the city's electricity down. This disaster consisted of 2 major earthquakes at magnitude 9.1 and a bigger one at 9.6 on all 800 miles of the San Andreas Fault. On May 29, 2015, the entirety of California experienced a catastrophic disaster never before seen in the world.
